Justin Potter and Alexandria Libraries 2025 Summer Reading Program

The Justin Potter and Alexandria Libraries Summer Reading Program will begin on June 5th and end on June 26th. All events for both libraries will be in the DeKalb County Complex Theatre Room at 2:00 pm. Children of all ages can begin registering for Summer Reading at both libraries on May 27th. Each child that registers and meets their goal will receive a participation certificate and other goodies at the end of the Summer Reading Program. Program attendance in not required to participate.

Color our World programs include the following events:

Thursday, June 5th at 2:00 pm – Opening party with Mr. Bond’s Science Guys and DTC Photobooth.

Thursday, June 12th at 2:00 pm – Barry Mitchell’s “Show of Many Colors” and DeKalb County Health Department.

Thursday, June 19th at 2:00 pm –. Edgar Evins State Park Rangers and Animal Friends.

Thursday, June 26th at 2:00 pm – Final Party with The Nashville Zoo.

They hope you will join them for a fun filled Summer Reading Program.

DeKalb County Library Board Meeting

The DeKalb County Library Board will have their bi-monthly meeting at Justin Potter Library on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at 4:00 pm. The public is welcome to attend.

Smithville Municipal Planning Commission Meeting

The Smithville Municipal Planning Commission will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday May 12 at 5:00 pm in the Smithville City Hall.

The agenda for the planning commission meeting is as follows:

Approval of March 10 minutes.

Consideration of request to rezone property located on West Main Street (further described as Map 064K, Group E, Parcel 003.02) from R-1 (Low Density Residential) to C-1 (General Commercial) (Hart Builders Request).

DeKalb County Regional Planning Commission Meeting

The DeKalb County Regional Planning Commission will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, May 12 at 6:00 pm in the DeKalb County Courthouse.

Jones Hill Cemetery Decoration Day

The Jones Hill Cemetery Decoration Day will be Sunday, May 25th at 2:30 p.m.

Alexandria Church of Christ Gospel Meeting

A gospel meeting at the Alexandria Church of Christ at 109 West Main Street will be June 1-4 featuring guest speaker Zack Wilken.  Services are Sunday morning at 9 a.m. followed by Sunday School at 10 a.m. and then a fellowship meal. The Sunday night service will be at 6 p.m. and services Monday-Wednesday night will be at 7 p.m.

DeKalb County Memorial Day Program

A DeKalb County Memorial Day Observance will be held Monday, May 26 at the County Complex Auditorium starting with patriotic music at 9:30 a.m. followed by the program at 10 a.m. The guest speaker will be Captain Larry D. Cripps, Retired Navy Chaplain, Author of the “The Hope of War”. Following the program, a wreath will be laid at the Veterans Memorial Monument at the Courthouse. All veterans, families, and citizens are invited to the program to honor the fallen and those veterans who have passed.

U.S. Representative John Rose Announces May Local Office Hour

U.S. Representative John Rose’s (TN-6) district staff will hold a local office hour this month for constituents to connect directly with caseworkers and receive assistance with federal agencies.

During the local office hour at the Board of Education Building, 110 South Public Square Smithville on Tuesday, May 20 from 10 to 11 a.m. district staff member Lou Nave will be available to answer questions and assist constituents with federal casework, such as social security and veterans’ benefits, steps for obtaining a passport, and more. Local office hours occur monthly. If you have questions, please contact one of Representative Rose’s offices so a staff member may help you.

“We are ready to assist constituents with federal casework and welcome anyone with questions to sit down with staff,”said Representative Rose.“My goal is to make the expertise of my staff and the resources of this office easily accessible to every person I represent.”

DeKalb County Schools Art Exhibit

The DeKalb County Schools Art Exhibit will be Saturday, May 24 featuring works of local art students. The annual event, sponsored by the Smithville Study Club, will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the DeKalb County Complex at 712 South Congress Boulevard. The public is invited to attend. DCHS Summer School Guidelines

Summer School 2025 Guidelines for DCHS May 27 - June 6

Parent Orientation May 15th, 4 pm to 5 pm

Please read before signing up
(1) Summer school at DCHS is for students who fail a class or classes and are eligible
for credit recovery.

(2) Credit recovery is for students who scored between 50 and 59 in a subject or
multiple subjects.

(3) If your child meets this requirement, please sign him or her up for summer school.

(4) Teachers will be on staff during summer school to assist students with credit
recovery.

(5) Students will not receive credit for the class until all of the work is completed and
notes have been verified by a teacher. Credit cannot be given if a student does not
take e-notes or paper notes.

(6) All school rules apply during summer school.

(7) Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided.

(8) You will be added to the summer school Remind group to receive all important
information, such as pick-up and drop-off instructions.

(10) Buses will also be provided for those that need it.

The annual decoration at Banks Cemetery

The annual decoration at Banks Cemetery in DeKalb County will be held May 30th, May31 stand June 1st 2025. Please plan to attend. Your support is needed to keep the cemetery properly maintained and kept looking nice. Someone will be onsite during decoration days to accept donations, or they may be mailed to:

45th Annual Older Americans Day Celebration

The month of May is recognized nationally as Older Americans Month, a time when we acknowledge the vast contributions older adults make to their families, communities and the
nation.

Justin Potter Library is partnering with the Alexandria Activity Center and the Smithville Senior Center in hosting the Older Americans Day Celebration. The event will be held in the theatre area of the Mike Foster Multi-Purpose Center located at 712 S Congress Boulevard on Wednesday, May 14th. The vendor displays will be located in the gym area from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM with drawings for door prizes and entertainment to follow.

This year’s theme is “Flip the Script on Aging”. The featured entertainment will be local ventriloquist, David Turner. They want to thank the local businesses and organizations for providing the door prizes, items for the goody bags and sack lunches for the older Americans to enjoy. Everyone who is an Older American is invited to this free event. 2024-25 DeKalb County School Calendar

The 2024-25 DeKalb County School Calendar is as follows:  The last day of school will be May 23, 2025 (abbreviated 7:45 a.m.-9:15 a.m.). May 22 will be an administrative day. Report cards will be issued at all schools on May 23. The DCHS graduation will be Friday, May 16.
